A. LARGE PUBLISHERS DOWN; SMALL PUBLISHERS UP. According to Publishers
Weekly (http://www.PublishersWeekly.com),
new titles from the big New York publishers declined 5% last year, mostly
in adult fiction and travel. Title output was up 5.8% overall for a total
of 150,000 titles. University press title output was up 10% over 2001.
More than 10,000 new publishing companies were established in 2002; there
are 73,000 publishers nationwide. OTOH, the big five publishers in New
York accounted for 45% of the market share.

sales rising to $76 billion. In addition, 70 percent of those surveyed
reported positive operating margins from Web sales last year, compared
with 56 percent in 2001 and the profitable companies generated enough
profit to more than offset the losses among the 130 large Internet retailers
surveyed.

A. HOW DOES YOUR COVER APPEAR TO THE COLORBLIND? Anyone who thinks their
book cover is beautiful may want to think again. To
a color blind person, it may look quite different. Download a free Photoshop
plug-in at http://www.vischeck.com
to see how different a book cover looks to people with various forms of
color blindness. I was surprised to see that, in one of my favorite designs,
the prominent fish photo was effectively invisible to a color blind person.
It's also good to check your cover photos in grayscale mode to see how
they'll reproduce in a newspaper review.

D. TO SEE THE DIFFERENCES IN TWO VERSIONS OF THE SAME MS-
WORD DOCUMENT, merge them. Go to Tools\Compare and Merge Documents. You
can merge the two into the original document or into a new file. Test
this on a short document to see how it works.
E. IF YOU HAVE AN ANTI-VIRUS PROGRAM such as Norton or McAfee, do not
rely on automatic periodical updates or notifications. Make "live
updates" daily. The newer viruses are worse than ever and are appearing
more often.

ParaThoughts
CONSIDER PUBLISHING YOURSELF
Dan's Story
If you self-publish, you will make more money, get to press sooner and
keep control of your work.
My first real book was The Parachute Manual; A Technical Treatise on
Aerodynamic Decelerators. It was 8½ x 11 with 2,000 illustrations and
590 pages. It did not take long to find that publishers were not interested
in a large technical niche book. I was also concerned to find that if
I had sold out, the low royalty rate could not repay me for the eight
years of work in writing the book.
Worse, no publisher would know where to sell such a manual. This was
not a “bookstore type” book. It had to be sold to parachute manufacturers,
parachute lofts and skydiving instructors. I knew how to find them. By
self-publishing, I made more money.
My second book was titled Hang Gliding; The Basic Handbook of Skysurfing.
I saw the movement coming, loved to fly and wrote the first book on the
subject. From idea to a printed book took just 4½ months. Since it takes
most large publishers 18 months to turn a manuscript into a book and get
it to the stores, I had the only book on the subject for almost two years.
By the time a competing title was published, I had sold more than 30,000
copies and owned the territory. By self-publishing, I got to press sooner.
A few books later, I teamed up with Frisbee® expert Mark Danna to write
The Frisbee Player’s Handbook. The gimmick was to make the book circular.
I had the books punched out 8.7” in diameter with a short 5.5” spine.
Then we packaged the book in a custom-imprinted 119 gm. Frisbee disc.
The unique book was reviewed everywhere. No publisher would have produced
a book in this manner. By self-publishing, I kept control of my work.

HERE IS SOMETHING FUNNY WE FOUND ON BOOKS, WRITING, PUBLISHING, AUTHORS
AND/OR WORDS. If you have a laugh to share, please send it to DanPoynter@ParaPublishing.com
Frank Lingua, president and CEO of Dissembling Associates, is the nation's
leading purveyor of buzzwords, catch phrases and clichés for people too
busy to speak in plain English. Business Finance Contributing editor Dan
Danbom interviewed Lingua in his New York City office.
Danbom: Is being a cliché expert a full-time job?
Lingua: Bottom line is I have a full plate 24/7.
Danbom: Is it hard to keep up with the seemingly endless supply of clichés
that spew from business?
Lingua: Some days, I don't have the bandwidth. It's like drinking from
a
fire hydrant.
Danbom: So it's difficult?
Lingua: Harder than nailing Jell-O to the wall.
Danbom: Where do most clichés come from?
Lingua: Stakeholders push the envelope until it's outside the box.
Danbom: How do you track them once they've been coined?
Lingua: It's like herding cats.
Danbom: Can you predict whether a phrase is going to become a cliché?
Lingua: Yes. I skate to where the puck's going to be. Because if you
aren't the lead dog, you're not providing a customer-centric proactive
solution.
Danbom: Give us a new buzzword that we'll be hearing ad nauseam.
Lingua: "Enronitis" could be a next-generation player.
Danbom: Do people understand your role as a cliché expert?
Lingua: No, they can't get their arms around that. But they aren't
incented to.
Danbom: How do people know you're a cliché expert?
Lingua: I walk the walk and talk the talk.
Danbom: Did incomprehensibility come naturally to you?
Lingua: I wasn't wired that way, but it became mission-critical as I
strategically focused on my go-forward plan.
Danbom: What did you do to develop this talent?
Lingua: It's not rocket science. It's not brain surgery. When you drill
down to the granular level, it's just basic blocking and tackling.
Danbom: How do you know if you're successful in your work?
Lingua: At the end of the day, it's all about robust, world-class language
solutions.
Danbom: How do you stay ahead of others in the buzzword industry?
Lingua: Net-net, my value proposition is based on maximizing synergies
and being first to market with a leveraged, value-added deliverable. That's
the opportunity space on a level playing field.
Danbom: Does everyone in business eventually devolve into the sort of
mindless drivel you spout?
Lingua: If you walk like a duck and talk like a duck, you're a duck. They
all drink the Kool-Aid.
Danbom: Do you read "Dilbert" in the newspaper?
Lingua: My knowledge base is deselective of fiber media.
Danbom: Does that mean "no"?
Lingua: Negative.
Danbom: DOES THAT MEAN "NO"?
Lingua: Let's take your issues offline.
