A. LETTER TO THE EDITOR INSTEAD
OF A NEWS RELEASE FOR PUBLICITY. What started out to be a single letter
to the editor snowballed into my upcoming participation in the
Nike Run Toronto 10K Marathon, corporate sponsorship, a photographed
interview in the Toronto SUN and a prime-time TV news interview. The corporate
sponsors include Medtronic, Telus Mobility and running gear to try
out from FILA. You read that correctly; all of this publicity
that originated from a no-cost single one-hundred word letter to the editor
to a Virginia newspaper in the USA.
This is great news considering I am located in Canada.
Since the letter to the editor
section is usually the most read portion of a newspaper, you will
be interested in reading them so you can offer your comments or make additions
to a published news story. For an example, if the media runs
a story how the local library anticipates lower funding during the next
budget, write a letter to the editor on how you feel as an author or writer.
However, don't stop there! If your letter is published,
send it to your clients, prospects and other significant contacts to identify
that you are the advocate for their important cause. This
is how I landed the sponsorship for the marathon race which rolled into
media interviews. For greater publicity, use a combination of press releases
and letters to the editor.

C. SELLING BOOKS TO COMPANIES:
When marketing your books or products do not forget the company you work
for or have worked with in the past. Many times these companies may be
willing to purchase copies of books and donate them to a worthy cause.
A past employer of mine recently purchased 300 copies of my college success
book, "Giving Away the Keys: A Professor Unlocks the Secrets to College
Success" to give to the Boys & Girls Club and ProjectGrad. I
approached my past employer about donating the books and they were willing
to participate because it was a good cause. When approaching a company
give them a list of organizations that can use your book.

eBOOK EXPERIENCE
Much to my surprise, I won a Palm Tungsten T at the BEA Book Fair. I was
delighted to find ten current best sellers preloaded in the Palm Reader.
This was my first eBook experience as a consumer. I would have never thought
that reading an eBook could be so superior an experience to a paper book.
The book was always with me. If I woke up in the middle of the night,
I could read my book without turning the light on and disturbing my wife.
When I was at lunch, I could hold the book and turn the pages with one
hand. When I read something that stimulated me to want to research it
further, the bookmark and notation process was intuitive and part of the
Palm Reader program.
It may help that the first eBook I read was "The DaVinci Code,"
by Dan Brown. This was hands down one of the best books I read in years.
I bookmarked nearly 30 pages for follow up research.
As an eBook, reading was easy
and fun. More than anything, it was simply more convenient. I'll never
give up paper books, but I see a very bright future for eBooks.
